The moment you find out you’re pregnant, your body begins an incredible process of adaptation. Long before your belly starts to show, your hormones are shifting, your cardiovascular system is changing, your uterus is growing, and your nervous system is constantly responding to new demands. And while the first trimester is often talked about in terms of morning sickness, fatigue, and getting through those first 12 weeks, there is so much more happening beneath the surface. Your body is already doing an incredible amount of work to support both you and your growing baby.
Your Body Starts Adapting Right Away
Pregnancy is not something your body suddenly adjusts to later on, in fact, adaptations begin almost immediately in order to conceive. Hormonal changes help support the pregnancy and prepare your body for the months ahead. Blood volume begins increasing, your heart and circulatory system adjust, digestion can change, and your uterus begins growing to accommodate the baby.
At the same time, your nervous system is continuously processing these physical and emotional changes. This is one reason the first trimester can feel so different from “your normal”. You may notice the following:
- Increased fatigue
- Nausea of changes in appetite
- Food aversions or cravings
- Changes in digestion
- Breast tenderness
- Headaches
- Changes in sleep
- Increased emotional sensitivity
- Feeling more overwhelmed or needing more rest
None of this means your body is doing something wrong, in fact these “symptoms” are signals that your system is being pushed through tremendous adaptations. This does not have to be a part of your pregnancy, if your nervous system has the capacity to support adaptations.
Why Does Pregnancy Make Me So Tired?
Fatigue is typically the most common early pregnancy experience. Your body is investing significant energy into supporting the developing placenta and baby while also adapting to hormonal and cardiovascular changes. Instead of seeing rest as something you have to “earn”, think of it as part of your body’s work. When possible you need to give yourself permission to slow down, prioritize consistent sleep, and even take short periods of rest throughout the day. Pregnancy is not the time to prove how much you can continue doing without support, and in fact, should be the time you start asking for more help when you need it.
Supporting Your Body During the First Trimester
There is no perfect pregnancy routine, but there are multiple simple ways to give your body additional support.
- Hydration: Your fluid needs change throughout pregnancy. Keeping water nearby and drinking consistently can help support circulation, digestion, and overall wellbeing. If plain water is difficult to tolerate because of nausea, experiment with temperature, flavor, or adding foods with high water content.
- Nourishment: You don’t have to have the perfect diet, especially when you are navigating nausea or food aversions. However, focusing on what you can tolerate and gradually working words a variety of protein rich foods, fruits and vegetables, whole grains/ fibers, and healthy fats is very important not only for babies development, but also your health
- Gentle Movement: As this can help support strength, circulation, mobility, and overall wellbeing. Walking, gentle pilates, swimming, and very simple mobility work are all beneficial during this first trimester. The goal isn’t to push through exhaustion, but rather find movement that feels supportive for your changing body.
- Nervous System Based Chiropractic Care: Pregnancy is very much a nervous system experience. Your nervous system is constantly taking in information from your environment and your body is helping you respond appropriately. Physical changes, emotional changes, work, relationships, sleep, nutrition, and the general stressors of life all contribute to the total amount of information your body has to process. Therefore, creating opportunities for regulation and recovery matters. This is where chiropractic care fits in.
